School letters / Accommodations
Scheduled or on-request breaks
Permission to leave the classroom briefly, with a pass or a signal, to a designated place such as the counselor's office or a quiet room.
When it helps
Rising anxiety, sensory overload, or hyperactivity that needs a movement outlet. Works best when the destination and the return plan are written down.
How it is usually written
Student may take a break of up to 10 minutes on request, with a pass, to the designated location, and will return without penalty.
Making it work
The two things that make a break pass work are a named destination and a rule for coming back; without them, the pass becomes a way to leave and the teacher stops honoring it. Early use of the pass is the goal, not a sign of overuse. Write the maximum length and the destination into the plan so no one has to negotiate it in the moment.
Asking for it
A clinician’s letter that names the diagnosis, states the functional problem at school, and asks for this accommodation by name is what gets it written into a plan. The 504 and IEP support letter below builds that letter from structured choices and includes this accommodation with the wording above.
Hear when this changes
A short note when a school letter generator or a glossary entry is added. No more than a few a year.
