Accommodations
Each accommodation from the glossary on its own page, with the detail that does not fit in a glossary entry: how to write it so it works, and what tends to go wrong.
- Extended time on tests and assignments
More time, usually time-and-a-half or double time, to complete tests, quizzes, and timed in-class work.
- Testing in a separate, low-distraction setting
Tests taken in a smaller room or a quiet space away from the full class.
- Preferential seating
A seat chosen for the student's needs: near the teacher, away from the door or windows, or near a calm peer.
- Scheduled or on-request breaks
Permission to leave the classroom briefly, with a pass or a signal, to a designated place such as the counselor's office or a quiet room.
- Daily check-in and check-out with a trusted adult
A brief scheduled contact at the start and end of the day with a counselor, teacher, or aide.
- Reduced homework load
Fewer problems or shorter assignments that still cover the same material, or a cap on nightly homework time.
- Modified or gradual attendance schedule
A written plan to return to school in steps, for example half days for two weeks and then full days, with attendance counted according to the plan.
- Medication administration at school
Authorization for the school nurse to store and give a prescribed medication during the school day.
- School safety plan
A short written plan naming warning signs, what the student can do, which adults the student can go to, and what staff will do if there is a concern about self-harm.
- Access to the school counselor or psychologist
Permission to see the counselor on request, or a scheduled weekly contact.
- Written instructions and a copy of class notes
Multi-step directions given in writing as well as verbally, and access to notes or slides after class.
- Organizational support
Help with planning: a checked planner, chunked long assignments with interim due dates, or a weekly binder check.
- Sensory accommodations
Noise-reducing headphones, permission to avoid assemblies or the cafeteria, fidget tools, or adjusted lighting.
- Flexible deadlines and no late penalties during treatment
An agreed window for late work without grade penalties, usually for a defined period.
