School letters / Accommodations
Access to the school counselor or psychologist
Permission to see the counselor on request, or a scheduled weekly contact.
When it helps
Any student with an active mental health condition who benefits from a known adult at school. Scheduling it removes the barrier of having to ask.
How it is usually written
Student will have a scheduled weekly meeting with the school counselor and may request additional contact as needed.
Making it work
Scheduling the contact removes the hardest step, which is asking. A weekly ten-minute check-in is more useful than an open-ended "may see the counselor as needed" that depends on the student initiating it. Ask that the counselor be the single point of contact for teachers' concerns, so the student is not fielding them from six directions.
Asking for it
A clinician’s letter that names the diagnosis, states the functional problem at school, and asks for this accommodation by name is what gets it written into a plan. The 504 and IEP support letter below builds that letter from structured choices and includes this accommodation with the wording above. For a student coming back after a hospitalization or a leave, the return-to-school letter sets it out as part of a re-entry plan.
Hear when this changes
A short note when a school letter generator or a glossary entry is added. No more than a few a year.
