School letters / Accommodations

Reduced homework load

Fewer problems or shorter assignments that still cover the same material, or a cap on nightly homework time.

When it helps

Depression or medication effects that reduce stamina, or a return from treatment where catching up on everything at once would set the student back.

How it is usually written

Homework will be reduced to the essential items needed to demonstrate mastery, with nightly time not to exceed 60 minutes across subjects.

Making it work

Cap the time, not just the number of problems, so the student stops at the cap rather than working past bedtime on a task that will not change the grade. Say whether the reduced work earns full credit; it should. Put an end date or a review date on it so the reduction is revisited rather than quietly becoming permanent.

Asking for it

A clinician’s letter that names the diagnosis, states the functional problem at school, and asks for this accommodation by name is what gets it written into a plan. The 504 and IEP support letter below builds that letter from structured choices and includes this accommodation with the wording above. For a student coming back after a hospitalization or a leave, the return-to-school letter sets it out as part of a re-entry plan.

Hear when this changes

A short note when a school letter generator or a glossary entry is added. No more than a few a year.
